I just had a conversation with Ron Heacock and Karen Walasek of HillHouse Writers Retreat, a 34-acre farm and writers’ bed and breakfast.
Imagine country living without the work — sitting on the front porch listening to the birds, watching a cat purring in a pool of sunlight, stretching your eyes to the distant horizon as the Tennessee hills stretch out at your feet.
You finish your coffee and step back into your room — with its own fireplace — to get back to work on your book. You’ve got no distractions, no duties, just you and the wide open page inviting you to dive in.
At sundown there will be fireflies, and then stars, brighter than you’ve ever seen them in the city.
And quiet. Did I mention no distractions and no duties?
Making all this happen for writers are Ron and Karen, two writers themselves, self-confessed “foodies” — that’s your gain — who combine the famous Southern hospitality with an awareness of what a writer needs to make progress on a long project.
They also have some useful tips about how to make the most of a writing retreat and how to make progress in your own writing every day of the year.
Visit the HillHouse Writers Retreat website.
And if you decide to stay there, please tell them I sent you.
